Foraging the Soutpansberg

Walking the wild pantry

A morning hike at Few & Far Luvhondo often doubles as a grocery run. Follow our guides through the bushveld to discover an edible landscape hidden in plain sight. You learn to read the bush, uncovering ingredients and traditions that have sustained local Venda communities for centuries.

We take only what the mountain can spare, harvesting with deep respect for the ecosystem. Because we rely on wild herbs, seasonal berries and native flowers, our menu remains fluid. Summer thunderstorms bring fresh, green shoots, while the dry winter months offer earthy notes in roots and bark.

Back at the lodge, our kitchen team transforms your morning discoveries into evening feasts. We pair your foraged finds with produce from our own gardens to create dishes connected to the environment.

Taste our wild honey. Sample our signature beetroot gnocchi, a dish that captures the essence of the red dirt you hiked across. Try a delicate consommé made from baobab leaves, or experience elevated versions of traditional chakalaka and pap that honour local Limpopo flavours.

As dusk settles, gather around the open fire in the boma. Savour a slow meal cooked over the coals, where every bite connects you directly to the wildness, quietness and strength of the Soutpansberg.

On a guided foraging walk, you can:

  • Crush wild sage between your fingers to release its sharp scent
  • Identify and taste indigenous plants straight from the earth
  • Learn the medicinal properties of the roots and leaves beneath your boots
  • Harvest seasonal botanicals to carry back to our kitchen
